Chanel Les Essentiels (Fall 2012 Collection)

By the time one hits 30 one is bound to have regrets. I have two (three if you count my ex!), one of which is not becoming a makeup artist.  Talking about the things I could change… So I did.  Actually, both of them, but the other one would be relevant only if this was a blog on clinical psychotherapy. 😀

So, my makeup lessons started this afternoon – it feels good to be a student again, even more so from a teacher’s perspective! Our teacher is a nice lady who used to work for Shiseido in Germany. She is so nice I can’t possibly guess her age! 😉

However, I had a look at Chanel‘s new collection today.  OMG, LUMIÈRE D’ARTIFICES BEIGES (ILLUMINATING POWDER WITH SHIMMER) is perfection:

xxx, snm

p.s. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic.

The one

No, this post doesn’t have anything to do with sex, pure Platonic love only…  ”The one” being your HG beauty product you would never cheat on – body, mind & soul. The one that you use to hide your age but it actually does a great job of revealing it better than your ID, as you remember exactly what the older version looked like years or even decades ago. The one you stock up on fearing it might be discontinued. The one you unquestionably grab at the local chemist although you have barely enough money to get through to the next paycheck, even if it means living on cheese on toast the whole week (no offence Brits, I love you nevertheless)! Well, let me introduce you to ”the one”:

L'Oréal Exfotonic Skin Revealing Exfoliator

L’Oréal Exfotonic Skin Revealing Exfoliator

I’ve been using it for nearly half of my life, so I remember it as a baby in a jar:

I believe it was first launched in the early 2000s.  The secret ingredient(s)? Combining chemistry with mechanics – it looks like this two are crucial for a satisfying sex life as well as a quality exfoliator!

L’Oréal Exfotonic Skin Revealing Exfoliator has all the benefits of a regular body scrub that  mechanically removes dead skin cells by rubbing  with the added benefit of AHA  which provides a light chemical peel, leaving you with super-soft, glowy skin.  It is by far the best scrub I’ve tried.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Girls, what is your beauty staple? ”The one”, anyone?

A cellulite cream that really works

It doesn’t erase it. No cream does. But it does work wonders to the extent any topically applied thing can. So, what’s so special about this one?
Well, for starters, it’s not one but two:

For my opinion, read on…

I don’t know about resculpting but would agree on the firming part.  Smells fresh, feels fresh… been using it for 5 weeks –  once a day after showering. Great for massaging with L’Occitane‘s Firming Massager!

Unfortunately this almond beauty isn’t enough… For a serious attack on that ugly orange peel syndrome you’ll need one more pricey beauty:

What L’Occitane says:

Almond beautiful shape

Opinion of my unbiased bum and thighs:

This really works, especially used in combo with the aforementioned Shaping Delight and the Firming Massager. The key is to vigorously massage cellulite-prone areas twice a day for few minutes.

It might be used as an intensive treatment over a period of 4-6 weeks alternating between the 2 products, one in the morning and the other in the evening.  Yes, a rather pricey solution but at least it does what it claims.  Finally!

Worth repurchasing? HELL YEAH!

A question for ladies who stumble upon my blog:

What is your favourite anti-cellulite product?

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm review

What Clarins says: http://www.clarinsusa.com/Beauty-Flash-Balm/C010405004,en_US,pd.html&cgid=Topsellers_Face&start=1

What I say:  Very mixed feelings… given it’s one of the most popular beauty products ever! Why? Let’s see:

  • it does tighten the skin a bit (especially when used as a mask left overnight)
  • it might even brighten it a bit too, but…
  • the application is awful – no matter how little you use, it still peels off  like crazy
  • peeling off makes it useless during the day – if you use it under makeup it messes it up completely (everything peels off the moment you touch your face!)

Would I repurchase? Definitely not.

Girls and boys, does anyone have a similar experience with this product or is it just my skin? 🙂

Shu Uemura cleansing oil review

I fell in love with Shu Uemura while living in Japan years ago. Unconditional love. Eyelash curler? The best ever. Cleansing oils? My absolute HG. Before discovering this little miracle removing makeup had been an unavoidable hassle: makeup remover, face wash, toner. This is all 3 in 1 – just spread it gently over dry face, massage gently around eye area (removes even waterproof makeup!), add a few drops of water to emulsify (this is important to remove very waterproof makeup), oil will turn milky white. Finally rinse it off with warm water. Voila! Clean, firm, nourished skin!
There are 6 different versions, I’ve tried this 2 so far:

PROS:

  1. removes waterproof makeup easily
  2. barely-there, clean smell
  3. no need for face wash and toner
  4. looks great on the bathroom shelf, convenient pump

CONS:

  1. price – 28 pounds for 150 ml (5 fl. oz) / 56.50 for 450 ml (15.2 fl oz) but oh-so-worth-it!

PROS:

  1. removes waterproof makeup easily
  2. no need for face wash and a toner
  3. anti-aging properties
  4. packed with anti-oxidants
  5. looks great on the bathroom shelf, convenient pump

CONS:

    1. price – 28 pounds for 150 ml (5 fl. oz) / 56.50 for 450 ml (15.2 fl oz)
    2. smells like olive oil, which I personally dislike

TIP: the instructions say to use 3-4 pumps, however I find 1 pump enough for the whole face including eyes… Massive saving!

Would I repurchase:  Absolutely.

Dior Nude Natural glow sculpting powder review

I bought this gorgeous powder 2 years ago and still have 1/3 left.  To be fair, I use it only on  special occasions.

Although I have enough makeup to last me 3 lifetimes, I never buy anything on a whim. I see it, I review it, then review it a bit more, sleep on it…and only then if I still want it, I buy it.  That way I make sure I don’t regret it. This expensive bulky case was no exception.

What Dior says:

First color palette compact foundation by Dior, DIORSKIN NUDE COMPACT combines three shades that recreate beauty in its every nuance. It offers incredible comfort and a unique makeup result thanks to its very specific formulation, which contains energizing Mineralized Water. When applied, the powder melts on the skin for a result as natural and satiny as a cream. The complexion is enhanced, luminous and ultra-natural. Mixed with the brush, the three shades make it possible to adjust the color for tailor-made makeup. Used separately, they emphasize the curves of the face and create sophisticated Nude Makeup.

What I say:

Oh, so true! It makes my skin glow amazingly…like my skin’s been photoshopped  😉 Comes in 4 shades, each shade containing 3 separate powders: highlighter, sculptor/blusher and unifier. Comes with a brush that is surprisingly useful! Although, given the hefty price tag, it better be!

PROS:

– medium – and buildable –  coverage

– a little goes a long way, thus lasting a long time

– stays evenly put in moderate climates (not in the summer though, but what does?!)

– covers redness and mild rosacea

– amazingly GLOWY, flawless skin without being too shimmery

– decent brush

– SPF 10

CONS:

– not perfect during summer – skin tends to get oily fast

– due to its decent coverage quite visible under direct sunlight

– may come as too shimmery if you apply too much (less is defo more!)

– might clog pores – it’s a mineral powder after all (titanium dioxide 2.97%)

– hefty price tag (around 50 euros in EU)

TIP:  apply using small circular movements holding the brush at the right angle (90 degrees towards the skin) so it gets into the pores evenly 😉

Would I repurchase?  YES!

If you’ve tried it, let me know what you think! ❤

You know those mornings when you’ve been working on your presentation until 4 am, managed to get 3 hours of sleep and you’re not 22 anymore so it’s visible…this is the perfect powder to make people believe you are, in fact, 22.

Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm review

I got this by accident.  A rather pleasant one…So, let’s see:

What Dior says:

A made-to-measure lip balm that beautifies and durably enhances the lips’ natural color. A customized color result : thanks to its Color Reviver technology, Dior Addict Lip Glow reacts directly with the unique chemistry of each woman’s lips before releasing its color ingredient. Lips seem revived from within, amazingly fresh, full and radiant. In addition, its SPF10 formula enriched with wild mango and luffa cylindrica continuously protects and moisturizes. A universal balm for all lips.

What I say:

This lip balm delivers what it promises. Ok, apart from the ”unique chemistry-revived from within” bit, but big words, just like big boobs, never fail to sell.  The colour of the balm is a very nice baby pink, however when you put it on, can change from a nice sheer gloss that makes your lips plump and sexy to absolutely horrific fuchsia colour, so beware if you’re not a fan of magenta. I’ve had this balm for half a year and couldn’t figure out why and how the colour changes, until I went out in the cold (-5 C) and caught a glimpse of my face. My lips were hot magenta colour, not exactly the look that suits me! 😀

Overall, a nice sheer pinkish gloss that changes colour – perhaps depending on the temperature. Moisturizes just fine and smells very nice. As with the whole Dior Addict range, the packaging is absolutely gorgeous.

Would I repurchase?

Yes, but only if duty-free priced, otherwise I don’t think it’s worth the steep price tag.

Beauty tips I wish I knew 10 years ago – part 2 (eyes)

I’ve been reading Gray’s anatomy (the book, not the series :D) for my studies for the past couple of hours so escaping into beauty feels like that much needed mid-afternoon caffeine boost! So here goes a continued  list of my beauty tricks that save me from ending up with overdraft fees:

EYES:

  • instead of curling my eyelashes by squeezing  Shu Uemura eyelash curler for half a minute, I found out I get much better results by squeezing 5 or 6 times for a couple of seconds! Alternatively, you can get your own heated curlers by heating them with a hairdryer for a few seconds to get a better, long-lasting curl. Be careful not to burn yourself – check the curler with your fingers first!
  • after a long day of wearing a lot of mascara my eyelashes deserve an overnight treat…putting a drop of castor oil on my fingers and gently rubbing it on my eyelashes  before applying eye cream does the trick! I started using castor oil after I clumsily pulled out quite a few eyelashes with the curlers (yup, bald spot, not pretty at all!), years ago… I remember being surprised how the castor oil really helped the regrowth. Highly recommended and very cheap!!!
  • one of the biggest makeup faux pas is applying eye pencil not close enough to the lashes, which looks rather cheap. You want the line to start in between eyelashes, so do it like a pro – instead of closing your eye while drawing a line keep your eyes opened and make dots with the eye pencil in between lashes and then connect the dots with a bolder line. Finish by filling in the line as close to the eyelash roots  as possible with a very thin, liquid liner (something cheap but long-lasting will do – I use S.he Quick eyestyler : http://www.s-he.at/en/products/eyes/)
  • finishing your eye makeup with a white liner on the inside rim of the lower eye will make your eyes look bigger and brighter! Especially useful after a long night 😉

STAY TUNED 😉

Clarins Eye pencil (waterproof vs regular)

After a hard day of using my brain at work for no less then 10 hours I need my sedative to keep me balanced. Yes, you guessed, my diazepam is actually makeup. Sometimes a damn expensive one I must admit! 😉

I have green eyes and love brown eye pencils,  especially when I’m in a rush! My fav so far are Clarins, as they are of decent quality but rather affordable. I couldn’t decide between regular or waterproof version so I got them both.

Although their number is the same – 02, the waterproof version is as the name says – more bronze than proper brown. When compared, waterproof version does stay on longer and smudges less as expected, but when it comes to colour I prefer the regular version.  Some pros and cons:

CLARINS EYE PENCIL 02 BROWN

pros:

  • nice true brown colour (esp for green eyes)
  • good staying power (12 hours or so)
  • glides on easily
  • felt tip for smudging
  • price 😉

cons:

  • smudges – especially in hot weather!
  • can break if not stored in refrigerator before sharpening

CLARINS EYE PENCIL WATERPROOF 02 BRONZE

pros:

  • great staying power
  • price
  • doesn’t smudge
  • felt tip for smudging

cons:

  • doesn’t glide on easily – feels sort of rough on the lids!
  • can break if not stored in refrigerator before sharpening
  • bronze colour which might not suit everyone

Would I repurchase? Perhaps, especially if they make a hybrid of the two – the colour of the regular one with staying power of the waterproof version!

Sex or makeup?Both!

Nude Barbie dolls

Image via Wikipedia

Hi! I’m a 29 year old girl who has been obsessed with makeup since…well, pretty much since I can remember (I recall being very disappointed with my Ken doll as he didn’t have enough makeup on!). My second obsession started showing at about the same time when I realized that Barbie and Ken didn’t look quite the same with their clothes off…

20-something years later, I’m a high school language teacher training to be a clinical sex therapist, having a hard time figuring out how to combine teaching, sex and makeup and NOT face certain legal consequences! It seems I have found it 🙂

Have fun ❤
